But his potential in Background music is amazing. Many of us when thinking and speaking about Ilayaraja, we give our emphasis to his songs.

The man seems to have countless musical offerings for all of the life’s situations. I’ve recalled and sang (within my head) his songs like a lost soul. I’ve lived some of the best times of my life with Raja’s music playing in the background. Raja’s music was so dominant in the 80s that you just cannot escape them. Most of my listening sessions were during the travel. But, the point in Raja’s music was the combination of a super-intelligent music with subtle background variations which made me go listen to it again and again. I evolved from getting impulsively attracted the way a song opens and started appreciating the finer nuances.

It then dawned on my now-aware brain that the man behind those incredible songs was Ilayaraja – the connection was made and ever since I’ve been referring to them as ‘Raja-songs’. Then, later I started noticing a pattern – most of the songs I loved were from Ilayaraja. When I started noticing Ilayaraja, it was mostly a ‘Kamal song’, ‘Rajini song’ or a ‘Mohan song’ and never a Raja song. I’ve always wanted to write about Ilayaraja and the impact he has had in my life, but it’s far more difficult than even the one I wrote about Rahman.
